The Volunteer Program offers you an opportunity to play an active role in supporting and promoting the work of the Library.

Since 1989, volunteers have been supporting tasks at the Library that would not otherwise have been possible or would not be completed for a considerable period of time.

The Volunteer Program has an important role in supporting us in achieving our strategic goals, and enhancing our programs and projects by complementing the skills and resources of staff. Volunteers are not used as an alternative to paid employment or to displace paid staff.

Volunteer roles

Foyer Information Desk (FID) and Concierge Volunteers

Foyer Information Desk Volunteers provide information about our services and facilities to visitors on weekends and public holidays. Concierge Volunteers welcome visitors to the Library during peak periods such as major exhibitions and holidays. These volunteers need experience in dealing with the public and an interest in and commitment to our collections, services, and exhibitions.

Volunteer Guides

Volunteer Guides provide exhibition tours and information about the Library building and its services. They need to have experience in dealing with the public and speaking to groups.  Volunteer Guides are often asked questions about the Library in general and must also be prepared to learn about the functions and role of the Library. Tours may be scheduled for the general public or special interest groups.

Behind-the-Scenes Volunteers are placed across the Library to undertake clearly defined projects. They are allocated a supervisor within the work area who will guide and assist them with the volunteer project.
